Walleye Fishing Tips

Back to Basics...

Walleye fishing tips. Good fishing tips will help you catch more and bigger fish. There is a lot of advice out there and much of it is good. The use of jigs, crankbaits and bottom bouncers all are successful tactics when fishing for walleye. The key point to remember when it comes to fishing is you need to consider all the tips you read. There is not one universal strategy that works everywhere, all the time, in all conditions and for every type of fish.

This is especially true when it comes to walleye.

walleye fishing canada, walleye fishing trip, walleye fishing, how to catch walleye, walleye fishing tips If there is one word for you to remember while fishing for walleye, it is versatility. Don’t be afraid to switch from “what has always worked” to a strategy less conventional. If you depart from the norm when things are slow, it can translate into a terrific day of fishing for walleye.

Like everything else there are some strategies that work better than others. Generally speaking one of the most successful techniques for catching walleye is the vertical jig. This is simply sitting over a fishing hole with a jig and bait and bouncing the lure up and down at varying degrees of depth and speed.

While the lure and bait are important while jigging, many anglers tend to put too much thought into the specifics surrounding the head of the jig. Experience shows that anglers should be more concerned with the color and size of the tail. When the fish are biting, this technique is dynamite.

But remember the word versatility. If the bite is slow you need to experiment with the size and color of the jig or tail. Often moving to a smaller jig with a presentation less robust can spur the walleye to strike.

Good walleye fishing tips will talk about different strategies through the year. Take note. Bright colors such as yellow or florescent green tend induce a good number of strikes in the spring. If the water you are fishing is muddy these bright colors tend to outperform anything that is dark.

As the summer wears on however, the use of a dark colored rubber tail can often pay dividends. Switching your bait from a leech or night crawler to a minnow or beef heart is often a necessity as the year wears on. Remember to be versatile and don't be afraid to switch things up when the seasons change.

The use of a light fishing line is one of the most important walleye fishing tips you need to remember. Walleye can be very light strikers at times. If your fishing line is too heavy it can make sucking the lure into the walleye’s mouth difficult. Try using a 4 to 6 pound test line when catching walleye. You will find your success rate should go up compared the use of a line with a thicker diameter.

These are just a few of the basic walleye fishing tips that are common to many anglers. There are strategies that vary depending on location, the type of water you are fishing and the season. Remember to be versatile and have a variety of tackle to throw their way. If you do, you should enjoy success.

Thanks for reading.

Good fishing.
