Walleye Fishing LuresWalleye fishing lures can be tremendously varied by season, location and skill level. But don’t think this is something that makes the walleye difficult to catch. In fact, with all due respect to the bass crowd, the walleye can be caught in much more diverse conditions across North America than any other freshwater fish.
The walleye has an amazing ability to adapt to different water systems. In some locations its diet may consist of insects, frogs and crayfish. In others, the walleye may primarily feed off of minnows. This is when you need to understand the body of water you are fishing and select your walleye fishing lures to match. In some water systems the use of timeless methods like jigging or live-bait rigging can pay dividends. In others you might have to resort to crank-baits or back trolling spinners. Others yet, particularly in reservoirs, a leech on a jig and slip-bobber will often catch you your limit. The thing to remember is catching walleye should not be a mind bending challenge. Understand the lake or river you are fishing and adjust your strategy accordingly. Fishing for walleye can be as simple as putting a night crawler on the end of a pickerel rig and casting it to the bottom of an underwater shelf. The terrific thing about walleye fishing in Canada is that there are tactics that work no matter the skill level. You don’t need to be intimidated by the pro-fisherman who has more equipment and electronics than NASA. A modest supply of walleye fishing lures, a couple of light fishing rods and bait is all you need. Because walleye can be caught on a wide variety of tactics, it makes it a terrific game fish for any age and proficiency level. Basic walleye fishing lures you need to have in your tackle box vary. A good start includes a variety of jig heads (colors and weights), rubber jig tails, crank-baits and spinners. If you are fishing a river you may want to consider bottom bouncers and live bait rigs. Remember, no matter where or when you are fishing, you need to match your walleye tactics to your specific body of water. If you do that, you should have success no matter your age or skill level. Thanks for reading. Good fishing.
