Trolling with salmon fishing lures is a technique that is used regularly by Canadian fisherman. Many trophy Coho and Chinook salmon have been caught while trolling spoons and it is a method that has more to it than meets the eye.

Baitfish make up a large portion of the salmon’s diet. Finding the right salmon lure to match what they are feeding on can often yield terrific results.

Trolling for salmon provides you with a number of advantages when it comes to catching this fish. For starters, by trolling you cover a heck of a lot more real estate than you would otherwise. You are able to zero in on the hotspots and target the right areas to nail the fish. You are also able to cover more water in a rapid fashion when compared to other methods. This allows you to find the fish faster than the boat next to you.

The most effective salmon spoons for trolling are typically lightweight and thin. This combination produces the best injured baitfish simulation and a hungry Coho or Chinook often can’t pass them up. Because the salmon fishing lures are fairly light and the salmon can be up to 80 feet in depth, the use of downriggers and divers are sometimes a necessity.

Coho salmon are typically found in freshwater at a shallow depth of 50 feet or less. This is because the water temperature they seek is typically at this location in the water column. The Coho seem to be especially attracted to fast action spoons and if you include a small dodger ahead of the spoon the action can be terrific. Some salmon lures that have proven themselves over the years include the Flutter Spoon, Rattlesnake and Krocodile.

Chinook salmon can be found in deeper water and at times are not easily fooled. Any abnormal action in the water can turn them off. A salmon fishing lure that works well trolling for Chinook is a spoon that has a pronounced wobbling action. A side to side wobble are prominent in salmon spoons like Alpena Diamond, Point Defiance and Tom Mack. These can be irresistible to Chinook salmon if presented the right way. Make sure you have a variety of these salmon fishing lures in your treasure chest before you hit the water.

Both the Coho and Chinook salmon are looking for a specific water temperature. Finding this temperature is actually more important than the time of day you are fishing. The salmon are looking for the thermocline layer that is home to roughly 55 degree water temperature and a variety of baitfish. Find the water temperature, and you will usually find the salmon.

But finding the right water temperature can be a bit of a challenge from day to day. Don’t assume it is always at the same depth in the water column. Wind and wave action can alter where the preferred temperature for salmon is. You may have to relocate it each time out.

There are a number of things to consider when fishing for salmon. There is more to catching this fish than just using the right salmon fishing lures. You need to make sure you can find the fish and are able to reach them.

When you do, you will typically have a terrific outing.
