A Portable Ice Fishing House
The difference between a good and a great day
A portable ice fishing house gives an ice angler a competitive advantage over his counterparts. A good ice fishing house that can be quickly picked up and moved gives you the freedom to head where the action is. Don’t limit yourself to one location on the frozen lake.
If the fish aren’t biting where you have dragged your non-portable ice fishing house, you have a decision to make. You can go find the fish and subject yourself to the elements. Or you can hunker down in your ice fishing shack and hope to catch one or two fish throughout the day. Either option is not overly attractive.
Play it smart. Use a portable ice fishing house for shelter wherever you want to fish on the ice. If the fish aren’t coming to you, you can go to the fish. It’s quite straight forward.
Another advantage a portable ice fishing hut gives you is a better chance to catch a variety of fish. Catch walleye at your favorite spot in the morning. Land some trophy pike in the afternoon. And go get some rainbow as the sun goes down. A portable ice fishing house gives you flexibility and warmth that other on-ice strategies do not.
There is a variety of portable ice fishing huts that you can choose from. But first you need to determine what your requirements are. How many anglers will be using the hut? How tall are you? Where do you anticipate fishing? What is your method of moving between locations on the ice or between lakes? Finding the right portable ice fishing house can really make the difference between a short day and a long day on the hard water.
A popular configuration for an ice fishing house is usually large enough for 3 men. On the coldest of days it will help protect all three while giving you access to the water. In the event there are only two of you using the portable ice fishing shanty, it will give you ample opportunity to stretch those legs out.
A portable ice fishing house should be easy to move. The smallest will fit easily into the back of a mini-van – and is generally a “tent on the ice”. Usually an ice fishing hut of this nature will have a “sled” as a base making it easy to pull across the ice and snow. A portable propane heater is usually enough to take the cold edge off if you are in an ice fishing shack of this size. If you don’t have a heater (but I would suggest you get one for the cold days) this type of shack will always give you a place out of the wind.
If you like to bounce between locations and have the ability to use a ˝ tonne truck, you may want to get a portable ice fishing house that can be transported in the box of the truck. These types of ice fishing huts usually have a wood or aluminum base and are covered with a heavy canvas. They will fold and unfold like a tent trailer making them easy to manage for two adults. Often an ice fishing hut of this type will have a small wood burning stove (which is a slice of heaven on the hard water). They can accommodate up to four anglers, but three is ideal.
This type of portable ice fishing house is also easily pulled by a snowmobile. If a snowmobile is your method for getting your shack to your favorite spot, just make sure it has skis on the bottom. Once you get there unfold it like a tent trailer and away you go.
The bottom line is a portable ice fishing house will give you a lot more options on the ice. If you simply want something to get you out of the wind, it is what the doctor ordered. If you really want to live “high on the hog”, get yourself an outfit that has a small wood burning stove.
A portable ice fishing house will give you the ability to extend your stay on the hard water on even the coldest of days. Many fish species in winter are most active at dusk and dawn. Don’t be forced to head home before the real action starts.
Get yourself a portable ice fishing house and have some real success on the ice.
