Penn Fishing ReelsThere is no debate about it; Penn fishing reels are among the best in the world. I have used Penn fishing products all my adult life. I can also tell you Penn fresh-water fishing reels have little competition in the heavy-duty freshwater fishing market. I can say this with absolute enthusiasm and honesty since this comes from over a decade of experience. The fishing experiences with Penn helped me battle some of the biggest freshwater species in North America. It did not matter what line the Penn model in my hand was, all that mattered was that the name ‘Penn’ appeared somewhere on the reel.
My Hands-On Penn Fishing Experience
My experience with Penn fishing reels, started out in the Gulf Stream off West Palm Beach Florida with upwards to a 160 pound Atlantic Sailfish! All of the ‘big sails’ were being pulled in, with Penn reels only. Understandably, this is saltwater and has nothing to do with Penn fishing reels for freshwater. But I just want to give a backbone to the review of one of the best fishing reel manufacturing companies I have ever had the pleasure of dealing with (in both salt and freshwater).
75 Pound Monster Yellow Cats
My appreciation for Penn fishing reels started out on the rough and tumble waters of the Atlantic Ocean. That initial experience evolved into a deeper appreciation for all things Penn. I started to fish for giant ‘Yellow Catfish’ under causeways and dams in the Midwestern water-ways. This is where the quality of a Penn freshwater fishing reel came into play! The quality of a Penn reel was evident as I was landing or attempting to land the 60 to 100 pound, over-sized monstrous catfish.
Penn AF Spinning Reel Series
My experience with Penn bait-casting and Penn level-wind heavyweight, freshwater fishing reels, has been nothing but spectacular. I have never had a negative experience with any of the Penn fishing reels while doing battle with dozens of species of freshwater fish in North America. My next purchase will be a Penn AF spinning reel series; medium action ‘can catch all fish’, Penn reel. Until then, let’s talk a little bit about the fine Penn name, and how this company was created.
Otto Henze Founds Penn Fishing Tackle Company 1932
As the early 20th century rolled around, the sport fishing industry started to show signs of life. As the joy of fishing in freshwater began to catch on, the industry grew. One man, an immigrant from Germany named Otto Henze, saw the need for quality, highly-engineered freshwater fishing equipment. After the Penn Fishing Tackle Company was created in 1932, Penn fishing reels have been in the forefront of high-quality reel manufacturing ever since. That’s one of the most important realms and factors of a great fishing manufacturer, and one that without a doubt is tops in the list for Penn Fishing Tackle Company
Penn ‘Captiva’ Spinning Reel Series

One of the featured lines of spinning reels for freshwater fishing is the Penn Captiva series. With all-graphite bodies and cold-rolled aluminum-strengthened framing along with eight stainless-steel ball bearings, any selection from the great Penn Captiva spinning reel series is the only reel you will need. It does not matter what species of fish is being targeted that weekend or day, as Penn Captiva has them all covered.
