A light show while you fish!
Northern lights Canada - an amazing thing to see. It is one of the advantages of fishing during the winter. If you are game to stay until after dark, you could be in for a fantastic light show. Besides, if you want some walleye, they usually bite right around dusk, so what the heck!!
Northern lights (or Aurora Borealis) originate from the sun. The northern lights of Canada that you see while ice fishing originate from explosions and flares on the surface of the sun. Particles are thrown through space at up to 1000 kilometers per second. These particles are drawn to the Earth by our magnetic field. When they collide with our atmosphere, we see an unbelievable display of lights and color in the sky.
The lights are most brilliant typically between 10pm and midnight during the winter. October, February and March are the best times to see the northern lights of Canada. February and March are a great time for ice fishing as many species are preparing for the spawn which is just a few short months away.
You will notice that the colors are either a combination of red and green or red and blue. This is a result of the nitrogen in the atmosphere that cause the red and blue, and the oxygen that creates the red and green colors.
A fishing trip with a light show! Take advantage of it and enjoy your winter on the ice. Try to add the light display to your agenda on your ice fishing trip. Northern lights Canada - something you will always remember!
