Manitoba fly fishing is one of the greatest natural activities a person can do regardless of gender. I have fly fished for all types of game species in both the United States and Canada and I can tell you that the art of fly fishing is second to none. Manitoba has some of the best spots to fly fish in all of Canada and possibly worldwide. The types of fish that can be fly-caught while in Manitoba are as follows: rainbow trout, lake trout, brown trout, grayling and brook trout.

Fly fishing is all about trout and the ‘fly’ is an artificial lure meant to mimic the lifecycle of a stonefly. In rivers and streams all throughout the Manitoba province and sections of the western United States, stoneflies emerge from their carapace and fall into the water. Once in the water, the stonefly newborns have usually a few moments to both dry off their wings and take off from the water’s surface. If this is not done in time, rainbow trout can gobble them up. Manitoba fly fishing is so good once you come here you may not want to leave! With 100,000 lakes and un-countable streams and rivers and creeks, the opportunity to drop a fly on top of a trout is wonderful.

I recall Manitoba fly fishing 2004, it was there that I hit my first brown trout and boy was I excited! I was fly fishing with a buddy there and we decided to leave the greenbacks for a while in the Red River and head over to one of his secret trout fishing streams. When we arrived about 30 minutes later, I thought I was at a scene out of the movie ‘A River Runs Through It’! It was that beautiful and after I regained my composure and cleared my throat I asked my friend what type of trout was to be caught here? He smiled and looked over at me and said ‘Big Rainbows’.

After tying on a few handmade flies that his grandfather had wrapped for us right before I flew in from Chicago, we began casting in hopes of tussling with some great rainbow trout action. Little did I know that within 30 minutes of casting woolly-buggers than twisted-mammy, which I would be so worn out from not only casting the flies but also fighting six good-sized rainbow trout! That made my entire trip, and has made me a regular on the lakes and streams of Manitoba fly fishing to this very day. Make Manitoba the location for youre next fly fishing experience.
