Ice Fishing Ontario

A great Canadian fishing vacation

Ice fishing Ontario is a hugely popular winter sport. Anglers from all over North America return every year to ice fish in Ontario. They do it for good reasons. The thought of fishing the widest variety of freshwater game fish in Canada is one motive. Others have unfinished business with a monster pike that humbled them the year prior. Other folks love to feel a clean Ontario winter fill their nose and lungs.

Whatever your reason for ice fishing Ontario, it’s a fantastic vacation that produces memories that last a lifetime.

Perhaps it’s the cold waters that improve their flavor, but fish you haul through the ice seem to taste better than at any other time of the year. Whether it’s pike, walleye or perch in the pail, you will be in for a terrific meal.

We’ve got hundreds of fish recipes from across Canada, don’t leave us until you have checked them out.

Ice fishing Ontario provides as good fishing action in the winter as it does the summer. In fact, many species of fish are more accessible during the winter than the summer. Deep-water species like lake trout and whitefish often move from deep holes and become available over a wider area. No matter the species you are after, Ontario is the place to catch them.

If you are willing to explore Ontario, the ice fishing options are unlimited. Many resorts stay open all winter and are used as home bases for ice fishermen. On some lakes you can enjoy all the comforts of home in heated shanties that are perched right over the best fishing holes. Often the on-ice transportation to the fishing locations is included.

In the northwestern part of the province big lake trout keep anglers smiling all winter. Lake of the Woods, for example, provides trophies every year to anglers of all skill levels. The area also offers fast action for walleye, whitefish, brook trout, pike and crappie.

A favorite spot in the near north is Lake Temagami. There you can nestle into a rental hut and catch your limit in whitefish, walleye or lake trout. Many anglers have huge success with perch in the area as well. Several outfitters will rent you an ice fishing hut along with on-shore accommodations if you are extending your stay.

While in the south, fishing the Muskoka Harbor and the Haliburton Highlands offer unbelievable scenery and some terrific fishing. The whitefish and lake trout keep all anglers on top of their toes. If you are looking for some big perch, check out Lake Simcoe. Some of the biggest jumbo perch come out of this lake every winter. There is also plenty of ice fishing huts to keep you warm.

With the number of lakes literally in the hundreds of thousands, Ontario has more ice fishing action than anywhere on the continent. Whether it is pike, crappie, walleye, trout or perch, you can find it across this great province. Every winter there are more trophy fish than you can count coming out of these waters.

Ice fishing Ontario. Don’t just think about it, do it.
