Fly Fishing PikeIs your equipment up for the challenge?.More fly anglers are fly fishing pike than ever before. The reason? Pike are aggressive and unpredictable. The battle with a northern pike on your fly rod will provide you a challenge you’ve likely not experienced. Fishing for pike with a fly rod is a refreshing change from casting. Rather than pounding a weed bed or rocky shelf with spoons, the smooth toss of a fly makes for an intriguing challenge. It also makes for a heck of a battle.
You will need a strong fly rod. Anything lower than a weight 8 is not recommended. This is because the flies you will be casting could be up to 6 inches in size. Additionally, anything smaller could lead to a long drawn out battle. As much fun for an angler this is, it can be very stressful on the fish. If you plan on letting the pike go, you need to keep their health in mind. Your fly fishing reel will need to hold a minimum of 100 yards of 8 to 10 line. The northern pike is strong and there is often a lot of real estate for them to run. Using an intermediate density on your line will be the way to go. Your choice of a fast or slower intermediate is your call. It often comes down to preference. If your intention is to keep the northern pike, make sure you have a net large enough to scoop him with. There is nothing worse than having a large pike at your doorstep and no way to get hold of him. If you have not tried fly fishing pike you need to put it on your to do list. It is a terrific way to fish for this underwater predator, and it will provide you enough stories to last a long time. Thanks for reading. Good fishing.
