Fly Fishing Hat
A key fly fishing accessory
A quality fly fishing hat is an important piece of your fly fishing equipment (Henry Blake knew this better than anyone)!
A good fishing hat is the difference between staying warm and protecting yourself from the elements (including insects). Don’t grab just any hat before you head out, consider the day and choose the appropriate head gear.
Key features of quality fishing hats include:
- Hat brim.
- A wide brim that is stiff will go further than a baseball cap. A wide brim will protect your face and neck from not only sun, but rain and wind as well. Additionally, a dark underside will help diminish the glare coming off of the water.
- Waterproof
- Look for a breathable material that will keep the water off. The key is to keep the rain out, yet let any heat through the hat so you keep your head dry.
- Floatable
- You’re in water. Enough said.
- Neck cape
- Many angers swear by a hat with a neck cape. They are your best bet for keeping the sun off of your neck. They also are effective from keeping the rain and wind off of the back of your neck which is otherwise exposed.
- Cotton band.
- A cotton band that encircles the cap is not only comfortable, but it also doubles as a sweat band. It is a key item to keep perspiration off of your face on warm days.
Fly fishing hats come in a number of styles. It is your choice what is right for you. Just remember the key objectives of the hat. You want to keep the sun, rain and wind off. Find one that does all three, and your days on the water will be much more comfortable.
Thanks for reading.
Good fishing.
