Fishing Rod Review

Hi and thanks for checking out our fishing rod review section. There are a huge number of fishing rods on the market today, and sometimes it can be confusing to know which rod is right for you. In this section of Freshwater Fishing Canada, we look at some of the more popular brand names and talk about what to look for when buying a rod. We even do some rod comparison by looking at three simple categories; Entry Level, All Purpose and Luxury Rods.

Generally speaking, having the right tool for the job makes any task easier. The same is true with fishing. The proper rod for the right situation often means the difference between catching fish and getting skunked.

A good general starting point for freshwater fishing is a spinning rod that is anywhere between 5.5 and 6.5 feet. Fishing rods of this size are capable of casting lures under .5 of an ounce a good distance without compromising accuracy.

Personally I like graphite rods. They are lighter and stronger than fiberglass models. I also am partial to a cork handle because they seem to be the most sensitive when it comes to detecting fish. But cork is not as durable as a foam handle and it will wear down over time.

When you buy your rod, don’t overlook the importance of the guides (these are the loops on the rod your line runs through). Make sure the guides on your rod are made of stainless steel. Anything else and you risk rusting and wear and tear. Your fishing line will be compromised if you continually run it against the rough edges of a rusty guide.

Now having said all of that, the kind of rod you buy will depend on the type of fish you are primarily going to catch. Take a look at the options below and select the category that is the most appealing to you.
