Fishing - A Fun Family Vacation Idea!
Fishing in Canada is a wonderful family vacation idea. Think about it. Is there a better place to connect with the kids than in a cabin or on a boat? Tie in a beautiful forest with a lake, some make-shift hiking trails and you have the makings of an unforgettable trip. As a youngster fishing was something that our family did together – and something we are passing along to our kids today. If you are looking for a place to “get away” and spend some quality time together (away from the hustle and bustle of other holidays) a fishing trip in Canada is an excellent family vacation idea to consider. It may become a welcome tradition.
If you are thinking about introducing your kids to fishing the age of five is a perfect time. By the age of five, they seem to be comfortable in a boat and can handle themselves if the fishing gets busy. A great idea is to go with a second family. Many fishing camps will rent a pontoon boat with a guide. Many of these boats will easily hold four adults and six kids (depending on their age). A pontoon boat gives kids the ability to move around (and fool around) by providing a large and stable platform. These boats also cut through waves and makes for smooth travel even if the water gets choppy. This is an excellent idea if you also want someone else to do the driving!
If you are taking young kids with you and you are introducing them to fishing for the first time, there are a few key tips to make note of. First of all, consider the time of year and location for this family vacation idea. The spring is a dynamite time of year to fish and should always be considered. But good fishing can be had right through the month of July in places as well. If you can’t do the spring – fishing can become the centerpiece of a summer family vacation idea, once school is out.
One of the success factors for your family fishing trip is for there to be “action”. If by bad luck you happen to have a slow day of fishing, there are lots of things you can do to make a fun day of it. You don’t have to spend the whole day in the boat. Remember, there is much more to fishing than catching fish!
First of all, make sure you bring some entertainment in the boat to easily pass the “slow periods”. Pack some snacks and drinks (lots of them by the way) and pull the boat onto an un-manned island or shoreline. You never know, you might have a "mini-explorer" on your hands. Kids are sure to find some unusual rocks or sticks that will grab their imagination. They might even see some wildlife. These little excursions are always a highlight for kids, and something they will always remember. Do a "mini-adventure" every day on your family fishing trip - it really is a blast for the kids. If the fire conditions are safe, many lakes offer “outpost” picnic locations with fire pits scattered around the lake. A wiener roast on the beach or rocks of an un-named island is also something most kids love. Make sure you bring marshmallows too!
If you are thinking about fishing as a family vacation idea consider this. The spring tends to offer a better opportunity for catching fish everywhere in Canada. If this is your sole intention, May and June are your best bet. Walleye and Northern Pike are a lot of fun to catch, but sometimes they need more work and patience. A great fish to get kids hooked on fishing is perch. Perch can be caught year round and are a fantastic fish for young kids to catch (and eat). A typical perch is no more than a pound and a half so are a perfect size for kids to reel in. If you find a hungry school, it is not uncommon to pull in up to one hundred in a morning or afternoon. Perch can provide the type of action that kids love. Explore and find the location that suits you. Your family fishing vacation can be as modern or rustic as you like. The key is to get away and spend some time together. Fishing is a wonderful family vacation idea. Come experience it in Canada if you haven't done so. You and your kids will love it!
