BC fishing attracts freshwater anglers from all over the world. The 20,000 kilometers of Pacific coastline is an obvious attractant, but the freshwater fishing is world class as well. British Columbia has more than 25,000 lakes and tens of thousands of kilometers of streams and rivers. If you love fishing, British Columbia has something for you.
The furthest Canadian province to the west, BC is a fisherman’s paradise. Whether you want to fly fish that perfect stream, or take a float plane to a remote location – you will never forget fishing in BC. In nearly every region of the province the fishing is as good as the scenery. There are more lakes and rivers than can be counted and the variety of fish is something to behold. Cutthroat, rainbow trout and char are found in most regions. And if that isn’t enough, you can tangle with monster pike, bass and whitefish. The top of the “must do list” for many anglers visiting the province is BC salmon fishing. For years the Chinook salmon has been the most sought after fish in British Columbia. The Chinook has been known to tip the scales over 70 pounds and will challenge anglers of any skill level.
Steelhead is another fish that sportsmen are on the hunt for in BC. Pound for pound there may not be a stronger fighting fish in Canada. It is little wonder people travel the continent for a chance to catch this terrific game-fish. It doesn’t matter where you decide to fish in BC, each region has something special. The Fraser River and Fraser Valley is home to steelhead, trout and Salmon and offer a wide diversity of fish species. In fact, sturgeon weighing in over 500 pounds have been found in this region. If you are in the big city, Vancouver is an accommodating fishing location. There is quick access to the Capilano Rover, Straight of Georgia, Howe Sound & Fraser River. If it is salt water fishing you are after, Horseshoe Bay offers boat and gear rentals with terrific fishing just minutes from shore. But if scenery is what you are looking for while BC fishing, Whistler is the spot for you. Here you will find glacier fed rivers and lakes that are home to spring runs of steelhead, salmon, rainbow and cutthroat trout. If you are coming in autumn, your timing will be perfect for Coho. Hot spots in the Whistler area include Callaghan Lake, Green Lake and Cheakamus Lake. Fishing the Okanagan, you will find more than one thousand lakes that are filled with a wide variety of game fish. Kamloops, Wells Gray and the Shuswap Lakes are areas that fisherman frequent and enjoy success. The most sought after fish in the Okanagan area include salmon, kokanee, steelhead and whitefish. BC fishing is like no other when you consider the majestic beauty and adventure of the Kootenay Rockies. The Kootenay River and Lake along with the Columbia River and Arrow lakes are home to fish that will challenge your fishing skills. Landlocked sockeye, bigmouth bass, rainbow trout, bull trout, whitefish and cutthroat trout can be caught in this beautiful corner of BC. There are a number of fishing lodges in every region of the province to help you find what you need. Whether it is the adventure in the Kootenay Rockies, or something more plush in Vancouver, you can find it in BC. Make sure you check the regulations of the province and make note of any slot limits regarding the region you are fishing. Come and fish BC. You will be glad that you did. Thanks for reading. Good fishing.
