Your Trophy Lurks in the Kalisof River
An Alaskan fishing trip. It’s a dream come true for many outdoor enthusiasts. The thought of fishing in one of the last frontiers in the world is enough to excite most people. But the fact you can couple that with some of the best fishing in the world really makes an Alaskan fishing trip something uniquely special.
Imagine yourself in Alaska. You are far from your everyday hustle. All you can hear is the sound of moving water and the sound of wind through the trees. The next thing you know you are nearly pulled out of your boat as you have latched onto a 40 pound king salmon.
Sound far fetched? Well it’s not. This scenario plays itself out every year in the Kenai Peninsula. Home to the largest strain of king salmon in the world, the Kenai Peninsula is a haven for sport anglers from around the world.
On top of the king salmon, sockeye have been thrilling anglers in these parts for years. Chances are you’ve heard of the Kenai River if you have been looking into an Alaskan fishing trip. It is world famous for the sheer size of king salmon that comes out of it every season. But don’t over look the other rivers in the neighborhood. In particular the Kalisof River should be on your list of places to consider.
Like the Kenai, the Kalisof River has two annual returns of king salmon each year. The first run on the Kalisof corresponds with the run on the Kenai. You will find world class king salmon plentiful in May and June. Even though the Kenai boasts the best track record for trophy salmon, the Kalisof cannot be overlooked. Every year king salmon in the 40 pound range are caught. This is enough to thrill even the most seasoned angler!
If you are planning your Alaskan fishing trip around the king salmon on the Kalisof take note. The early run generally is about two weeks behind the Kenai early run of the kings. You will find good action on the Kalisof River for early kings from about may 15th to June 30th.
July however, may be when you want to plan your Alaskan fishing trip. On the Kalisof in July you will find the wild return of late run king salmon. A wonderful thing about this run on the Kalisof is most of the fishing pressure is on the nearby Kenai. The Kalisof seems to be an afterthought. This makes for a wonderful day of drifting on the Kalisof nailing king salmon.
Every year during the July run anglers catch king salmon in excess of forty pounds. If you are going to fish the Kenai Peninsula consider spending at least a day on the Kalisof. The trophy’s you can catch on the Kenai River cannot be denied, but the action you can have on the Kalisof cannot be overlooked. Especially if you want to get out of the heavy traffic of the Kenai, the Kalisof River will be just what the doctor ordered.
Although we have only really talked about the king salmon on the Kalisof River, we have to again mention the sockeye. The best eating fish of all the pacific salmon, the sockeye can be found in good numbers from the end of June until the end of July.
Mix your day hunting trophy sized king salmon with the feisty sockeye salmon. This makes for a wonderful day on your Alaskan fishing trip. Although the sockeye average about 10 pounds on the Kalisof, pound for pound they are among the best fighting fish you will ever tangle with. When you get a good sized sockeye on your line, it will be something you will talk about for years to come.
